FAQ
Why should I join SWIS?
Simple. Because as a sailor you know how important accurate weather forecasts are. SWIS enables you to view forecasts in one place by the web, or have them delivered by email or SMS text message at a time and frequency of your choosing.
There are loads of free weather sites on the internet?
Yes there are, and they are free for a reason. The information they display is straight from a computer model. No amendments are made to this raw information and all you see is computer output. We enhance this data, and many of our forecasts also carry text created by real human forecasters. The old adage that you get what you pay for is never more true than when applied to weather on the internet,
What do I get for my money?
All our services offer unlimited access to all of our forecasts. These contain forecasts for sailing to 7-days ahead, together with a statement of the current general situation, and many also contain text forecasts written by our forecasters.
You can also have forecast emailed to you on a day and time of your choosing, and forecasts can be sent by text message.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes, you can have a FREE 14-day trial by signing up here.
What happens at the end of my 14-day trial?
Prior to your trial ending you will be invited to become an SWIS Silver or Gold member. If you choose not to do this, your subscription will revert to SWIS Lite.
This means that you have limited access to forecasts for the next 3-days, although you have full access to our text messaging service.
However, text messages are more expensive for SWIS Lite.
Can I choose when to receive an email and for how many areas?
Yes, you can choose when you receive your email, what day(s) and how many times per day. There are no limits for the number of emails which can be delivered.
What email address are the forecast sent to?
Email forecasts are sent to your registered email address.
Are emails included in the subscription?
Yes, emails are included in your monthly subscription and there are no limits of the number which can be received.
What is the advantage of receiving text messages?
The big advantage with text messages are that they reach places other data formats cannot reach. It is fine sitting in a marina or onland looking at high resolution web pages or emails, but once at sea, data reception is patchy to say the least.
Because text messages reach further offshore, you can usually receive text messages on your mobile telephone within a few miles of the shore, thus ensuring continued receipt of weather forecast information from a trusted source.
Also, data can cost a lot if you have left the shores of the UK, and SMS is usually a lot cheaper.
Can I choose when I receive my text messages?
Yes, you can set up a schedule through your account page and state when you would like to receive a message and for which area.
Can I receive text messages on-demand?
Yes, you can receive a text message on demand and instruction for doing this are included on your account page.
How many text messages does my subscription include?
Gold members receive 20-text messages each month to be used as they wish. Additional bundles of messages can then be purchased for use in that subscription month.
When are the forecasts updated?
Forecasts are updated three times each day at 0730, 1300 and 1900 UK Local time.
If there’s a problem, who do I talk to?
We pride ouorselves on our customer service. Simply send an email to support@sailingweatherinformationservice.co.uk and you will be responded to very quickly.
